A short Profile
After a brief, but enjoyable career in farming, his leaning towards the arts led Julian Stanley into Art College for a one-year vocational-course. After this he was introduced to the remarkable Frank Hudson of High Wycombe a Master Carver of the old school. His flair, enthusiasm and eccentricity drew Julian into his world of woodcarving and furniture making and were hugely inspirational to him at the age of twenty. From Frank Hudson he lerned the importance of tool control, speed and accuracy in most aspects of classical woodcarving.
After two years with him, having acquired a solid grounding, it was time to move on and develop his own style and business.
Working with many top designers, architects, furniture companies and of course, private clients, Julian has over the years been able to develop a large range of skills enabling him to produce beautiful and often very complicated carved furniture.
His mirrors are the mail means of introducing a little fantasy into his work and moving away from the more restrictive classical 18th Century ideals. Early on, it was the art Nouveau period with attracted him most with its free flowing lines which lend themselves beautifully to woodcarving.
Today, however, he turn to the 18th Century Venetian period for inspiaration of form. The mirror frames often envolve very quickly in the design stage. The sllek linear forms of swallows and terns lend themselves perfectly to the creation of some of these frams as they add a sense of fluidity and movement to the overall pictures.
